Sarah Outen – London to London via the World

This year’s Cheltenham Literature Festival welcomed celebrity appearances such as Judy Murray, Nigella Lawson, Tom Daley, Mary Berry and Sarah Millican.

I went to see British athlete and adventurer Sarah Outen MBE, who gave an inspirational talk about her worldwide trip from London to London. Her worldwide expedition began in 2011 where she cycled, rowed and kayaked 25,000-miles around the Northern Hemisphere. Her adventure took a whopping 4.5 years to complete, during which she had to overcome many mental and physical hurdles.

Sarah provided an enlightening story, describing the people she met along the way who provided her with much appreciated support and motivation. My favourite memoir was Goa, a young man in China who joined Sarah on her 3,000-mile trek across the desert of the continent. Sarah explained that before joing her in cycling hundreds of miles, Goa didn’t even own a bike.  For me, this proves how easy it is to be inspired by Sarah’s spirit of adventure.

Sarah Outen’s expedition provided her with invaluable lessons on risk, resilience and team work. A story of trying, failing, trying again and ultimately learning when to let go.

Sarah has recently written her book ‘Dare-to-Do’ documenting her adventure, and has also writing a children’s adventure book. It provides an incredibly inspirational account of her journey, and the life of this truly wonderful lady.
