This exciting series will give an honest, personal account of my experiences with Lisa Cartlidge Hypnotherapy, outlining her methods and my individual responses to a course of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.
Lisa’s Background & Training
Lisa is a fully-qualified, highly-trained hypnotherapist based on the outskirts of the picturesque Cotswold village Stow-on-the-Wold. Her clients suffer with anxieties, addictions, insomnia, physical pain and many mental health issues. Hypnotherapy focuses the mind on the positive and your preferred future, leaving negative thoughts to be insignificant. Her hypnotherapy sessions offer a holistic alternative to mainstream therapies, a gentle and approachable way to look forward into your future rather than dwelling on the past.
Lisa initially used hypnotherapy herself to centre her mind towards an athletic goal. She was so impressed with her results, both physical and psychological, that she quit her 9-5 job and achieved a diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy at the highly renowned Clifton Practice, Bristol.
Initial Consultation
I approached Lisa in hope of improving my physical and psychological responses to stress and anxiety. Having never experienced hypnotherapy before I arrived at her beautiful Cotswold home with slight anticipation, but generally with an open mind. As soon as Lisa opened the door I knew I needn’t have worried. I was welcomed with open arms into a calm and cosy room separate to the main house.
The initial conversation was a relaxed, informal discussion about my life and experiences with anxiety. Refreshingly, Lisa focussed on what I wanted to gain from the course rather than the reasons behind why I sometimes feel anxious. I had complete control over this conversation, did not feel pushed to discuss anything I wasn’t comfortable with, and actually felt as if I was catching up with an old friend.
Lisa then gave a clear and simple overview of anxiety-related psychology. Using images and diagrams she revealed what happens to the brain when a person is under stress. She explained how hypnotherapy makes the subconscious mind more receptive to beneficial suggestions, promoting a positive change.
As a result of the media’s representations of hypnotherapy there was a part of me which thought Lisa would have my eyes follow a swinging watch until she had full control over my decisions. Thankfully, however, this was not the case.
During the hypnotic state I lay on a chaise longue with my eyes closed, as peaceful music played and Lisa spoke. To describe this half-hour experience best, would be to say it was one of complete relaxation. Whist thinking and listening consciously, there was an involvement of the subconscious which can only be experienced under such a level of calmness. I am an over-thinker by nature, however my mind felt peaceful and quiet throughout. I ‘woke’ with not only my mind calmer, but with my body noticeably less tense.
I left Lisa’s house feeling positive, relaxed and intrigued about whether my thought processes would change over the next few days.
Will a change be noticeable? I look forward to finding out.
